Awards, Scholarships and Fellowships
Walter Irving Young Historian Award
If you are an outstanding history major, you could be awarded the Walter Irving Young Award in the spring of your senior year. The honor goes to one to two students every year, determined by faculty in the Department of History at Linfield. It includes a cash prize and an engraved plaque for display in our department.

Thomas Branigar Award
If you need to travel to do research for your senior thesis, you may apply for this award while taking two capstone courses during your junior and senior years at Linfield. The award provides support for student travel to archives.
Outside scholarships
- Boren Scholarship – Funding for international study in world regions critical to U.S. interests
- Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) – Intensive summer language training institute
- Davies-Jackson Scholarship – For first generation students to complete graduate work at St. John’s College at University of Cambridge
- Mitchell Scholar – For study in Ireland
- OAS Graduate Scholarships – For study in members of the Organization of American States
- Peace Corps Masters International – Various programs for funding graduate school through service
- Rhodes Scholar – For study at Oxford University
- The Anna Sobol Levy Foundation – Provides $10,000 per year for study at the prestigious Hebrew University of Jerusalem
- Truman Scholar – Funding for graduate school in return for government service
